Hi, My name is Patrick Brennan. I am an 8th Grade student at VLUS. As you may have heard, the Mayor's Cup Tournament for Cambridge’s little leagues has been canceled this year. My goal is to push to allow the tournament to be played. Other cities around Cambridge including Boston are deciding not to cancel their respective Mayors Cup, so why Cambridge? As of May 27th, 57% of Cambridge residents are fully vaccinated. With the percentage being so high, the risk of transmission among parents is almost fully absent. Secondly, about ⅓ of the kids that would be competing in the tournament are eligible to be vaccinated. This means that a good chunk of those kids will have had their first shot when the tournament begins, granting them about 80% immunity. Furthermore, most kids go to school where testing is required weekly, so if there was a COVID case, the league would know. Lastly, coaches have been instructed by league officials to enforce COVID protocols including, sanitizing equipment, elimination of handshake lines (with the replacement of tipping of the cap), and spaced out dugouts. With all of these factors, the risk of COVID spread during the tournament is very low.As a player who competed in the Mayor’s Cup Tournament myself, I can say It was one of my favorite moments of little league baseball. The cameras are on, The fans are loud, and you get to represent your part of town. I really believe that it would be great for the kids of Cambridge to play the tournament this year. So to wrap things up, do all of my pieces of evidence lead you to believe that we should hold a Mayor's Cup Tournament in Cambridge? If so, sign your name below.
