Hi everyone :) The Karratha Enviro Group in collaboration with the CARE group and with the help of St Luke's College are working towards a plastic bag free Karratha. Australians use 3.92 billion plastic bags a year, that's over 10 million new bags being used every day. An estimated 3.76 billion bags or 20,700 tonnes of plastic are disposed of in landfill sites throughout Australia every year. Australians dump 7,150 recyclable plastic bags into landfills every minute or 429,000 bags every hour. It is estimated that around 50 million bags enter the Australian litter stream every year. Unless they are collected, they remain in the environment and accumulate at a staggering rate. If these 50 million plastic bags were made into a single plastic sheet, it would be big enough to cover the Melbourne CBD. ( We are developing a programme that supports retailers in phasing out the use of plastic bags and have created a number of canvas and biodegradable alternatives thanks to a community grant. After an initial survey, we have had some great responses from retailers in Karratha. The next step is to get the wider community on board. We would be delighted if you could take the time to sign our petition, showing your support of a plastic bag free karratha. Please get each member of your family to sign and then SHARE SHARE SHARE this petition to all your friends, we would love as much community support as possible.
