While it would be a difficult decision and not without its risks, Pitt must stop evacuating its buildings for every new bomb threat. This must be done because there is no technologically plausible way to catch the perpetrators and no reason to think that catching a single perpetrator will cause the bomb threats to stop. Our only choices are to allow our university to be held hostage indefinitely or to take a reasonable risk. The risk is betting, based on compelling reasons, that the perpetrators neither have the means nor the desire to detonate an actual bomb. We wish for the authorities to continue investigating the threats and bring the perpetrators to justice. As members of the University of Pittsburgh community, this is a risk we are willing to take in order to continue the important work that we all do.
