It's time that investigations were made into the events that really happened on the Pine Ridge Reservation in the 1970's. Someone needs to help, he has been imprisoned so long for a crime that he didnt commit along with several others. My husband is in Yankton SD for a crime he didnt commit. It is long overdue for Leonard Peltier to be released from prison. He has served more than his share of time in prison. He must be given an opportunity to be reunited with family, friends and supporters. I hope that the United States Congress will hold congressional hearings to determine why Mr. Peltier and others were sent to prison. Leonard Peltier has been in prison for 44 years for a crime he says he didn’t commit. His trial was riddled with misconduct that would never hold up in a U.S. court today. Prosecutors hid key evidence. The FBI threatened and coerced witnesses into lying. A juror admitted she was biased against Peltier’s race on the second day of the trial, but was allowed to stay on anyway. There was never proof that he murdered two FBI agents during that 1975 shoot-out on Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. But the FBI needed someone to take the fall. The agency had just lost two agents, and Peltier’s co-defendants were acquitted based on self-defense. This was happening as the FBI was fueling tensions on the reservation as part of a covert campaign to suppress the activities of the American Indian Movement, or AIM, a grassroots group of activists focused on drawing attention to federal treaty rights violations, discrimination and police brutality targeting Native Americans. It is a dishonorable travesty that Leonard was convicted in the first place, and even more so he is continued to be confined. Leonard Peltier’s conviction and continued incarceration is a testament in a time and system of justice that no longer has a place in our society. We were not able to prove that Mr. Peltier personally committed any offense on the reservation. As a result to Mr. Peltier’s conviction, now arrest, is that he was guilty of a murder simply because he was present on the reservation that day. He has served time for more than 46 years on the hands of minimal evidence, a result I strongly doubt would be upheld in any court today. I believe that a grant of executive clemency would serve the best interest of justice and the best interest of our country.
