Piedmonters for Opportunities to Excel in Math (POEM)
.
Foundational value: It is an important value of the Piedmont community that our children should have opportunities to excel to the fullest extent of their abilities in all academic areas.

Key facts:
1) The Piedmont Unified School District (PUSD) staff presented a draft plan to the Piedmont community on March 31, 2014, for implementation of a Common Core math curriculum for grades K-12 (the “Draft Math Plan”).
2) The Draft Math Plan calls for the elimination of accelerated math for 6th graders for the 2014-15 school year.
3) The Draft Math Plan calls for the PUSD to merely study -- over the next year -- the possibility of re-instituting math acceleration for the 2015-16 school year.
4) Of the 16 public high schools in the Bay Area that are Piedmont's academic peers (those with an Academic Performance Index (API) score exceeding 890 and total enrollment exceeding 500 students), all but two (87%) are offering an accelerated math pathway for qualifying students to take a Calculus class in 11th grade.

Call to Action: By signing this petition, I am expressing to the PUSD Board of Education my support for the following proposition:
The Draft Math Plan of the PUSD must be changed to incorporate a commitment -- not just a plan to study the possibility -- to continue offering a pathway for qualifying students to take Calculus in 11th grade. The vast majority of Piedmont’s peer high schools offer such a pathway, so Piedmont must!
