This petition is to change a law in the State of Ohio.  If you have had too much to drink and decide to call for a ride, if you are in the drivers seat of a vehicle with the keys within reach (not in the ignition) you will be arrested for physical control.  This offense is slightly less than a DUI but is an alcohol related offense with much of the same penalties.  This I believe encourages people to try to make it home, punishes people for doing the right thing.
     In my case I was actually on the phone getting a ride from a friend when the officers approached my vehicle.  I was in the drivers seat of my car with the keys in the passenger seat.  I was arrested and sent to jail.  If I had been in the passenger seat and had left the keys outside of the car it would have been fine.  I chose to do the right thing though my home was a mile away because I didn't want to risk hurting others nor myself.
     Please help me change this law.  I could have driven drunk and gotten the same punishment.  I fear that people will just try to drive, why not if you will be charged just the same by sitting there getting a ride?
