For nearly a year, Patterson High School has been attempting to implement an innovative daily schedule that will best serve our community of students and staff. During that time, our administration has been given various reasons that we cannot do what is best for our students, staff and community. Allowing just thirty minutes of "early release" time for students each day will provide crucial structured time, which is not otherwise available in our daily schedule, for teachers to collaborate on a departmental and grade level basis in order to provide better instruction for students. Additionally, this "Clipper Time" enables our students to more easily engage with coach classes, sports and extracurricular activities. We have discussed possibilities of structured student-to-student peer tutoring and study hall which could be implemented during that time. Furthermore, our diverse population of students comes from a variety of neighborhoods around the Baltimore area. Ending the school day slightly earlier for them allows them to be involved with structured after school activities while still being able to get home safely before dark, even in the winter, when many parents and guardians have expressed concern about allowing their children to stay after school. The Patterson community is working hard to improve the quality of the education we provide for our students so that our students can achieve more. Allowing our administration to implement an innovative schedule is a critical part of building success for our students and school community.
