PHONE POLICY
THIS IS FOR THE FREEDOM AND SAFETY OF STUDENTS
We, the students of Fluvanna County, believe that the new cell phone and smart device policy does not truly serve the needs of students, nor does it reflect the reality of our daily lives. While we understand the intention of limiting distractions, banning devices “bell-to-bell”—including during lunch and class changes—takes away both our freedom and our sense of safety.
Students should be allowed to use phones freely during lunch and, when a teacher permits it, in class for learning purposes. Phones are more than entertainment; they are a direct line to safety. In emergencies, fast communication can save lives. Parents also deserve to know that they can reach us if something urgent happens.
Lunch is one of the only times during the school day when we can relax, recharge, and connect with friends. Taking away the option to use our phones during that time strips us of personal freedom and prevents us from deciding how to spend our own downtime. For many of us, lunch is not just a meal—it’s a break from stress, and sometimes our phones help us unwind, check in with family, or simply enjoy a moment of peace.
We are not asking for unlimited use. We are asking for balance. A policy that allows phones at lunch, during class changes, and when teachers permit them in class would give students freedom without creating disruption.
This is not only about convenience—it’s about safety, trust, and preparing us for the real world.
