PHM Leadership SIG

Goals:

1. Promote leadership development within the PHM community
2. Provide dedicated time for PHM Division directors and Fellowship directors to meet and share issues
3. Promote leadership as a career pathway within the PHM community.

Need for PHM Leadership SIG

The APA has been a consistent supporter of PHM starting with the PHM SIG in 2001 and sponsoring the first national PHM conference in 2003. The field has grown tremendously since then and is now the newest ABP subspecialty. While there are notable hospitalists who have achieved significant leadership positions within their institutions and in national organizations, the field is overwhelmingly made of early to mid career people. Surveys of hospitalists consistently call for mentoring and career development. This new SIG proposal is to address the need for leadership development within PHM. Leadership is not unique to division directors or fellowship directors so a combined leadership focused PHM SIG can help the common issues of both groups and provide a forum for those groups to interact and serve as a vital networking opportunity. Having an APA SIG will allow for leveraging dedicated time at the PAS meeting to take advantage of other PAS attendees as potential invited speakers. A dedicated SIG will also engage a currently active national PHM Fellowship Directors group and a newly formed Division Director subcommittee of the AAP Section on Hospital Medicine.
