The zoning board granted our variance. It was a long road to get here but we finally secured the future of the birth center in East Mount Airy. I am deeply exhausted yet relieved that we can now start the real work of building this space for our community.

Established local midwifery practice Philadelphia Midwife Collective (PMC) seeks to open a low-volume, midwife-operated birth center in East Mount Airy unlike anything that exists in the City today! PMC acquired a beautiful fixer-upper home at 245 E Johnson Street (19144) and has applied for a zoning use variance to operate a "group health practice" (i.e., birth center) there. Let's show the Zoning Board of Adjustment that Philly supports the adaptive reuse of this gorgeous building as a community birth center!
Please sign this petition if you support the proposed zoning use variance to convert the existing single-family residence at 245 E Johnson Street, Philadelphia, PA 19144 into a birthing center for prenatal, labor, delivery, and postnatal care – before, during, and up to 12 hours after birth for medically uncomplicated pregnancies.

I live in Mount Airy, not far from the proposed site of the birth center. The Philadelphia midwife collective helped me and my partner have our baby, and they are fantastic organization. I love that they want to open a birth center in my neighborhood!
This birth center will provide essential care to philadelphia parents, who until now have had to travel out of the city for out of hospital birth.
This will be a great addition to the city and will help close the healthcare disparity in Philadelphia. People should feel heard and safe when it comes to reproductive care.
Philadelphia Midwife Collective provides essential services to a wide range of community members. As a resident of Germantown (6 blocks from the proposed birthing center) and parent of a baby birthed by PMC, I wholeheartedly support the Johnson Street birthing center!
Birth centers are an absolute necessity to keep uncomplicated pregnancies healthy and safe for both mom and baby. I strongly support the development of any birth center in the area especially when they are run by well trained professionals like Mac Vantilburg. The community will be well served by granting this variance.
Long overdue!

Having a birth center in our neighborhood would be wonderful. My hope is that it will help support the birthing folks in this neighborhood who have limited options if they are trying to find a caring, supportive team to help catch their babies, regardless of their income level. This would be a wonderful resource for our neighborhood.
