Anyone questioning whether Phil Lynott is worthy enough as an Irishman to deserve this honor should listen and read the lyrics to Roisin Dubh (Black Rose) and this should quickly assuage any doubts. In my opinion it is the single greatest rock song ever written and is a pure love song to his homeland of Ireland. Still gets to me every time I hear it. Yes he was a flawed man, but who among us isn’t. He gave it his all in his short life and Lynott’s Thin Lizzy was everything a rock band ever could be or should be. Thank you so much for all you gave to this world. Your songs have had immense impact and meaning in my life and for many others as well. Phil Lynott will always be my tragic hero. God bless you sir and may you Rest In Peace.

Remember him well in Moran's Hotel with the Black Eagles. Eamon Coughlan has a roundabout, so why not PL Park with playground area and plaque.

The debate about what kind of memorial we should aim for (plaque? statue? place name?), and where it should be, has been going on for decades. Philo has been gone 32 years, and there's still no memorial to him, apart from the statue outside Bruxelles, which is in being repaired more often that it's on its plinth. More to the point, there's no memorial at all to him in Crumlin, where he was raised. This petition was prompted by the need to rectify that fact. If we are successful in getting Dublin City Council to name Bangor circle after Philip, it won't prejudice any future efforts to have Dublin Airport named after him. However...
I did consider setting up a campaign to have Dublin Airport renamed "Phil Lynott Airport", but I abandoned that idea almost immediately for the simple reason that Dublin Airport is a semi-state company - which means that we'd be dealing with two separate entities. The chances of persuading them both to agree to rename the airport are somewhere between zero and non-existent.
There is an ongoing petition asking for Cork Airport to be called "Rory Gallagher Airport". That petition has been running since 2006! And Cork Airport is government-owned, so in theory it should be much easier to have it renamed than it would be to have Dublin Airport renamed. And yet, twelve years and thousands of signatures later, Cork Airport is still Cork Airport (and of course it should have been renamed Rory Gallagher Airport years ago).
So yes, it would be great if they changed the name of Dublin Airport to Philip Lynott Airport, but the odds against that happening anytime soon are astronomical. Meanwhile, we Crumliners would like something to commemorate Philip *in Crumlin*, and what could be more appropriate than the green just around the corner from his house, where he played as a kid?
