This past fall, our Board of Education enacted a policy that changed the grading system from letter grades to percentage grades. The new policy altered grading so that instead of an 'A' appearing on a student's official report card or progress report , the equivalent percentage appears, be it a 98% or a 90%. For most students, the impact of this new policy is felt when final grades come into play.

As students, we understand how negatively this change affects our final grade. So we ask for your signature on this petition, in hopes that we will catch the Board Of Education's eye and have the policy changed back. Thank You!

To the Prince George’s County Board of Education :

The undersigned would like to respectfully petition the grading policy that was enacted after the start of the 2010-2011 school year. The new grading policy, which averages all the quarter final grades and transfers that percentage into a letter grade, does not showcase our abilities as it could. With the previous grading policy, students could receive an ‘A’ as a final grade as long as they had two ‘A’s as quarter grades, and the fourth quarter grade was an ‘A’. This system was excellent because it encouraged growth. Students had an incentive to work harder than ever during their final quarter in order to achieve a grade that would give them a better final grade. Students were less likely to slack off in the last months of school and continued to learn and perform well throughout the school year. The new grading policy does not support growth. A rocky start to the year can stifle a hard-working student and bring down his or her final grade despite continual improvement.
