The large office S3.10 in the Samuel Alexander Building has recently been vacated by LLC's Research Development staff. We the undersigned petition the powers that be in the School of Languages, Linguistics, and Cultures, to turn this space into a Postgraduate Common Room for LLC students.
Why?

• The Graduate Studies Centre on the fourth floor currently does not facilitate contact between students, as it is a quiet study space in which food and drink are not allowed and conversation is not possible.
• Such contact is an essential part of the life of postgraduates as students engaged in a labour of academic research that is by definition shared with others in their discipline.
• LLC does not currently have a Postgraduate Common Room, unlike other Schools in the University.
• S3.10 is an excellent location for such a facility, being close to the Graduate Studies Centre and adjacent to the Postgraduate Office.
• Indications have previously been given that a Postgraduate Common Room would be created, but nothing has yet materialised.
