Dear Worcester Public Schools Families,

While every family has a different relationship with technology, all families deserve a meaningful voice in how and when young children use technology. We are writing as fellow parents and caregivers of Worcester Public Schools students with a simple, urgent request: remove individual internet-connected devices from Pre-K through 2nd grade classrooms so students can have the freedom to learn without them.

We are asking WPS parents, caregivers, and educators to sign this petition so we can collectively urge the Worcester School Committee and District Leadership to remove the routine use of individual internet-connected devices in Pre-K through 2nd grade.

Why this matters

Early childhood is a critical time for building attention, vocabulary, self-regulation, creativity, empathy, and social skills. Individual device use in schools takes away time from engaging in hands-on learning, play, movement, and direct interaction with teachers and peers, which are the building blocks of a strong academic foundation.

What we are seeing and learning

In Massachusetts and across the country, school districts are actively revising policies to align with child development experts who recommend limiting and regulating screen use in early grades to support learning and promote healthy physical, social, and emotional development.

We are also learning that:

  • Individual internet-connected devices can reduce peer-to-peer interaction and teacher connection
  • Screen-based apps and games are designed to capture attention rather than deepen learning
  • Students can become more distracted and less able to focus and think critically
  • Young children are often technology consumers rather than active creators
  • Increased screen time is associated with declines in vision and eye health in young children
  • Screen time is sometimes used as a reward or during recess and snack time
  • AI-enabled, cloud-based devices raise ongoing privacy and data security concerns

Important exception

This request does not apply to students who require assistive technology or accommodations under IEPs or 504 plans. Those supports must remain fully available and individualized. It also does not apply to technology classes offered as special programs or to educators’ discretion in using technology to support instruction and learning.

Call to action

If you believe young children deserve a developmentally appropriate, human-centered early learning environment, we ask you to sign this petition.

We are specifically calling for the removal of individual internet-connected devices from Pre-K through 2nd grade classrooms, and for the Worcester School Committee and District to adopt policies that prioritize hands-on, teacher-led, screen-limited learning in early childhood education.

Please add your name and share this with other families, caregivers, and educators so we can act together to support early learning in Worcester Public Schools.

Sincerely,
Worcester for Safe Student Technology (WSST)

Its ridiculous that 5 year olds are using ipads as much as they do. My daughter needs to learn how to hold a pencil properly first.

Finally someone said it. The amount of screen time in schools is getting crazy. Bring back books and crayons.

My son is in 1st grade and he comes home just glued to a screen. Kids need to be playing with blocks and learning to talk to each other not staring at tablets all day.

Keep them offline. Childhood is about direct interaction not digital. Fix this now.

YES. They are way too young for this. Let them be kids for a few more years!

Kids should be learning from books and practice their writing instead of typing on a computer at this early stage
