Petition to UPUA for Penn State to join the Healthier Campus Initiative
Mental health is a rising concern among college students nationwide. According to nami.org accessed on April 23 ,2017 around ¾ of all chronic mental illness begins by age 24 and around 1in 4 college students have a diagnosable illness. Some of the main triggers for these illnesses are stress, social pressure and constant change. Due to our busty lifestyle, we eat find or what is most convenient for us not realizing how it can affect our mood or emotional well being. Evidence indicates that food plays an important contributing role in the development, management and prevention of specific mental health problems such as depression, schizophrenia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and Alzheimer’s disease. Those who report some level of mental health problem also eat fewer healthy foods (fresh fruit and vegetables, organic foods and meals made from scratch) and unhealthier foods (chips and crisps, chocolate, ready meals and takeaways).
