Petition to the City Commissioners of Delray Beach
PETITION TO THE CITY COMMISSIONERS OF DELRAY BEACH
For Enhanced Traffic Safety, Pedestrian Protection, and Neighborhood Improvements in the Seagate Neighborhood
To: The Honorable City Commissioners of Delray Beach Mayor Tom Carney
Vice Mayor Angela Burns
Commissioner Tom Markert
Commissioner Juli Casale
City Hall 100 NW 1st Avenue Delray Beach, FL 33444 Date: March 4, 2026
We, the undersigned residents of the Seagate neighborhood in Delray Beach, Florida, respectfully petition the City Commission to take immediate and meaningful action to address dangerous speeding, inadequate lighting, parking hazards, and related safety issues in our community.
Seagate encompasses approximately six square blocks and represents one of the most prestigious and sought-after residential areas in Delray Beach. With the exception of oceanfront beach properties, these are among the city's priciest and most desirable homes. As residents, we bear a significant burden through high property taxes, yet we believe that basic public safety— particularly for pedestrians, cyclists, pet owners, families with strollers, dog walkers, and all who enjoy our neighborhood—must be a non-negotiable element of living in this paradise.
Unfortunately, speeding along Seagate Drive and Seasage Drive has escalated to alarming levels, with vehicles often traveling at speeds resembling a runway takeoff rather than safe residential commuting. This has resulted in tragic and near-tragic incidents:
- In 2024, a gentleman walking his dog along Seasage Drive was struck by a speeding vehicle, resulting in the death of his beloved companion and hospitalization for the pedestrian.
- On the morning of [insert exact date if available; otherwise: recently], a vehicle struck a pedestrian at the Seagate/Casuarina intersection. The victim was classified as a Trauma Priority 3 case and transported to the ER.These are not isolated events; they reflect a growing pattern that endangers everyone in our community.
To protect residents and preserve the character and safety of Seagate, we request the following specific measures:
- Lowering speed limits on Seagate Drive and Seasage Drive.
- Installation and maintenance of functioning speed radars and prominent signage.
- Implementation of physical speed-calming measures (e.g., speed humps or chokers),while acknowledging potential impacts on emergency vehicle access and requestingcoordination with fire/EMS to ensure compatibility.
- Placement of additional stop signs at key intersections and locations to enhance controland visibility.
- Increased police patrols, enforcement, and accountability for reckless drivers.
- Improved street lighting throughout the neighborhood, as many parts remain covered indarkness after dusk, increasing risks for pedestrians and vehicles.
- Prohibition on parking on our narrow residential streets, which currently create dangerousfunnels for speeding vehicles that threaten pedestrians, dog walkers, and parents withchildren.
- Installation of signage reminding cyclists, joggers, and others that this is a residentialneighborhood, to deter aggressive cycling attitudes and promote shared safety.
We urge the City Commission to prioritize these improvements through engineering studies, budget allocations, and swift implementation. We are committed to working collaboratively with city staff and officials to achieve these goals.
