PETITION TO OPPOSE THE EXPANSION OF THE RUMPKE LANDFILL

TO: The Montgomery County Fiscal Court, the Montgomery County Solid Waste (109) Board, and the Kentucky Division of Waste Management.

WE, THE UNDERSIGNED RESIDENTS of Montgomery County and surrounding areas, formally submit this petition to voice our strong opposition to the proposed 184-acre expansion of the Rumpke Landfill located on Orear Road.

REASONS FOR OPPOSITION:
  1. UNACCEPTABLE ODOR & AIR QUALITY: For years, residents have reported "unbearable" odors emanating from the facility. An expansion of this magnitude will only exacerbate these issues, negatively impacting the air quality and the ability of local families to enjoy their homes and properties.
  2. INFRASTRUCTURE & TRAFFIC CONCERNS: The proposal includes increasing the daily limit of out-of-county waste to 1,100 tons per day. Our local roads, specifically Orear Road and surrounding routes, are not designed to handle the increased volume of heavy-duty waste haulers, leading to safety risks and accelerated road degradation.
  3. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT: We are concerned about the long-term risks to groundwater and local wetlands. Adding 36 years to the lifespan of this landfill creates a multi-generational environmental burden for Montgomery County that outweighs the short-term financial "host agreement" fees.
  4. QUALITY OF LIFE: The expansion is inconsistent with the county’s long-term solid waste plan and threatens the property values and general well-being of the community. We believe Montgomery County should not become the primary dumping ground for 30+ other counties.
OUR REQUEST:

We respectfully urge the Montgomery County Fiscal Court and the Solid Waste Board to DENY any requests for expansion and to demand stricter enforcement of current odor and debris mitigation protocols. We ask the Kentucky Division of Waste Management to prioritize the health and concerns of local citizens over the expansion of private waste facilities.
