All goverments are now reducing the investment in science. The Volcani Centre is an excellent research institution that must be supported. This movement will have a negative impact on this Institution.

Current location of the Volcani center allow close collaboration with several other research institutions, which is essential for efficient research. Physical isolation from other scientific communities always demonstrated, at worldwide level, to have serious negative impacts on the scientific productivity.

Volcani is one of the leading agricultural research centres and has an international reputation. The relocation of this word-class institution would be a disaster to agricultural science in Israel.

Close collaboration with other institutions, particularly universities that translate knowledge to the next generation of scientists, is essential for world class research. The Volcani has an impressive track record, with its research helping agricultural productivity in many arid regions of the globe. Water security is the greatest emerging threat facing humanity, and the Volcani are amongst the best researchers in the world. Operating in isolation, away from existing trials, will only have a negative impact. Please learn from Canada's move to relocate researchers to remote regions. They had an exodus of good scientists and the remote research teams have dwindled in quality.

THe VOLCANI is a reference center for many of us. I have been collaboratiing with a number of scientists (Dr. Susal Luire, Dr. Haya Friedman, etc) for many years. I know how important it is to be near other excellent research centers and pretigious universities such as the Weizmann and the HUJI.

I have had collaborations on agricultural research projects with colleagues in Israel for many years, based on common research interests, and partially in the frame of EU projects. There were Israeli postdocs in my lab and my group has a considerable number of joint publications with Israeli colleagues. Most recently (2015-2016), we have published three joint publications with colleagues from the Volcani Center in international journals (Theoretical and Applied Genetics, Phytopathology, Nature Genetics). The Volcani Center is a highly interesting research partner for us and one of the leading agricultural research centers in the world, greatly supporting the successful agricultural development of Israel since the foundation of the State in 1948, and probably before.
I have reviewed a large number of proposals for Israeli research agencies and am a member of the Swiss National Research Council. Furthermore I am or I was in the Advisory Boards of several top research institutions (John Innes Center, Norwich; Max-Planck-Institute for Plant Breeding Research, Research Programs of the German Ministries of Science and Agriculture). Therefore, I have some experience in the organization of research and feel obliged to share with you my concerns on the future of the Volcani Center.
Clearly, research organizations have to adapt to changing needs in policy and the global changes in general (among them climate change) affecting agricultural ecosystems. It is a constant struggle to adapt research organizations to new challenges so they are delivering the best possible products for national agriculture. I cannot comment on the details of the plans on the future of ARO and I trust that the responsible units in the Israeli government are looking for the best possible future of agriculture and agricultural research in Israel.
However, I have strong doubts that the measures proposed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will improve agricultural research in Is

The dismantling of Volcani Centre and its moving to a remote area of Israel can be a serious threat not only for the development of Israeli agriculture but also for the future of international collaborative research at ARO.

the Volcani center is a world-wide known Institution, famous for its high quality research and its strong links with the productive sector. I have seen in other countries changes similar to those proposed for this center, the results have been always catastrophic, with loss of scientists and focus, and poorer results than before. I spent 6 months at Volcani Center in Bet Dagan from 1986 to 1987. As an horticulturalist I can say that volcany inspired generations of researchers and was considered the highest rank of basic and applied research, beside the most important sceintific institutions worldwide. I know the benefit Israel and worldwide agriculture took and still take from Volcani and I consider a shame any hypothesis of closure
