Petition to Save MMAC's Outdoor Classroom
To:
The Honorable Steve Thompson,
BC Minister of Forests, Lands,
and Natural Resource Operations:
Dear Sir:
We the undersigned respectfully request that the Ministry of Forest, Lands and Natural Resources rejects the application for a cutting permit for cut block A90533 2 on Moresby Island, Haida Gwaii.
The cut block overlays an outdoor classroom utilized by all the students of Haida Gwaii for the past ten years.
The cut block will potentially impact a riparian zone with a unique plant community featuring many of the rarest plants found on these Islands.
Many of these plants are of the highest cultural importance to the Haida people and this is one of the most accessible places to see and learn about them.
The camp provides a secure and healthy environment to learn and bond for all the youth of Haida Gwaii and the location of the block would desecrate the sanctity of this place
The economic value of this 16 hectare block is insignificant compared to the community investment both financially and through years of volunteer commitment.
