Petition to restore Purdue graduate student funding

While I am supportive of dean Reingold's efforts to strengthen graduate edcuation in the College of Liberal Arts, his methods are descructive and, have quite literally put my well being (in terms of paying rent and buying food) at risk. I stand with the School of Language and Cultures in asking for adequate funding for all departments, and a more considered approach to restructuring that takes into account the needs of individual departments. If the dean truly values local control he will fund departments at a level that allows them to make constructive changes rather than attempting to do damage control.

Diversity in education is very important! Liberal arts is as important as ingineering.

I completely agree with the present petition and consider the proposed changes harmful not only for SLC but for the prestige of Purdue University in general.

Given the long-term repercussions of this policy, I think there should be more room for dialogue and reconsideration.

I would be interested in seeing the data that claims that our graduate students are not getting jobs upon graduation. We have had a very high placement rate over the years, close to 100%.

Please give a second though to your decision and consider the graduate and undergraduate students who will be affected by this. There is always a better way when we put others first.

I am signing this petition in favor of a far-sighted approach to how a proper R1 department (in any college) should be structured. This includes the whole picture, from undergraduate teaching through graduate study & support to faculty teaching, mentoring, AND research opportunities. Please do not nickel & dime higher education. It compromises the quality. What one limb suffers the others will also feel in our university. I sign as a graduate alumna and as a current VAP, so I've been on more than one side of this equation.

This initiative on the part of our graduate students demonstrates how fortunate we are as a department to work with such, gifted, free-thinking, and courageous students who are willing to speak when it matters. This is Liberal Arts education at its very best.

Bravo to our graduate student colleagues for taking this initiative!
