We, the parents of the students of the Golden Oak Community School, request that the position of the full time librarian is to be reinstated as soon as possible at the Golden Oak Community School.

We understand that the Sulphur Spring School District is attempting to minimize a budget deficit, but we strongly disagree that this should be accomplished through lowering the standard of pupil services.

The Golden Oak Community School library was established, upgraded, and maintained with a great amount of support from the Golden Oak PTA, which we support financially and otherwise. Therefore, we wish all that effort to not disappear. Servicing our library by an outside librarian only two and one half days a week will diminish every opportunity that our children had to access the wealth of accumulated books, computers, and other library services.

Research shows a strong link between the amount of time spend reading, level of reading, and mastery of progressively difficult reading with overall educational success, higher IQ, and future educational accomplishments. We do not wish our children to be the generation who were deprived of continuous accessibility of a school library as a haven for reading and personal growth.

Historically, the Golden Oak Community School’s Accelerated Reader program has been the most successful in the Sulphur Spring School District. We believe that one factor of this success was the accessibility of the library and the enthusiasm of our librarian, and this drove our children to their reading success.

We request that you reassess your decision to shut down our library two and one half days a week. This arrangement will barely allow our children to access the library once a week as a class. This arrangement will prohibit our children from spending recesses browsing books, taking AR test, or otherwise enjoying books. This arrangement also will make it difficult for our children to reach their reading goals, much less exceeding them. This arrangement will drive down the motivation of our children to read as it proves to them that the library, and consequently reading, is not important.

We demand that the Sulphur Spring School District Board reviews the decision to deny full time access to a library and allocates funds to provide full time librarian at the Golden Oak Community School.
