We, the undersigned
concerned students and parents of the Amherst Regional Middle School, as well as incoming
students to the school, are respectfully protesting the proposed schedule
change to the school, to be put into effect September 2015. We do not believe
that this is in the best interest of the student population, and the school
in general. We do not support the loss of Chinese as an option as a World
Language. We do not support the 50% loss of real language instruction. We do
not support only having Music (Orchestra, Band, Chorus) every other day, as
opposed to four days a week. We do not believe these changes provide an
equitable education and will negatively affect our ability to excel on these
disciplines long-term. We ask the School Committee to consider this petition while making their decision. Every signature counts, so tell all your friends!
Chinese should not be removed from the curriculum list. As China represents about 1/2 of the world's population, it will be important for the current generation of young people to learn Chinese. Languages are also very valuable, as many Americans do not speak a second language other than English, and learning a second language helps students better understand and appreciate diversity. If we are to combat race issues in the Amherst school system, limiting language classes is not going to help.
