PETITION TO PRIORITIZE GOVERNMENT JOBS AND APPOINTMENTS FOR YORUBA INDIGENES IN SOUTH-WEST NIGERIA
Dear Honorable Members of the State House of Assembly,
We hope this petition finds you in good health and high spirits. We are writing on behalf of concerned Yoruba citizens to bring to your attention the alarming rate at which non-Yoruba are being employed in government jobs across all Southwest states. We believe that this practice has marginalized Yoruba indigenes and it is imperative that immediate action is taken to rectify this situation.
Over the years, it has become evident that the Southwest State Government has allowed non-Yoruba to occupy job positions that could have served the interests of Yoruba sons and daughters and other in Government offices. This is particularly concerning at a time when the lack of job opportunities is at an all-time high. We would like to draw your attention to the actions taken by other states, such as Anambra, where the present governor, Prof. Charles Soludo, circulated a memo for job opportunities in Anambra's health sector. The memo emphasized that all applicants "must be from Anambra", ensuring that the interests of the indigenes are protected.
In contrast, we have observed that non-indigenes have taken over key positions in states such as Lagos State's healthcare department, especially among nurses and doctors, who are predominantly of non-Yoruba identity. This scenario is disheartening, as it disregards the wealth of talent and expertise that exists among our own people. We must ask ourselves why brilliant Yoruba women, who are more than capable of achieving great feats, are being overlooked for positions such as the first lady to drive a train in Lagos State. We cannot ignore the remarkable achievements of individuals like Tolulope Arotile, one of Nigeria's best Airforce pilots, who happened to be a Yoruba woman. If she can excel, why are we not giving other Yoruba women the same opportunities?
It is with great displeasure that we witness the persistent lack of self-preservation and unfavorable body language of all State Government in securing jobs for Yoruba indigenes . We have observed that states in Northern Nigeria and Southeastern Nigeria understand the importance of self-preservation better than us, the Yorubas. It is disheartening that the South-West State Government seems more inclined to pander and please non-Yorubas at the expense of the rightful beneficiaries. This mentality could potentially lead to self-destruction and a loss of trust among Yoruba populace.
To provide evidence of the actions taken by other states, we have attached excerpts of memos circulated in Anambra State for your perusal. These memos highlight the commitment of the Anambra State Government to prioritize the employment of indigenes in order to protect their interests. We implore you to study these examples and consider implementing similar measures in Southeast West State.
In conclusion, we urge all House of Assembly across Southwest states to address this issue urgently and take appropriate measures to ensure that the interests of Yoruba indigenes are protected in government employment. We believe that by doing so, the state will not only foster a sense of unity and inclusiveness but also tap into the immense talent and potential that exists among our own people.
We trust in your wisdom and commitment to the progress and well-being of all Southwest States and its indigenes. We look forward to a positive response and action on this matter.
Thank you for your attention to this pressing issue
Yours faithfully,
YORUBA NI WA COALITION
