Petition to oppose St. Mary's HUD housing on Main Street

To: Mayor John Cody, Council Members and Zoning Board
From: Concerned Residents of Cedarville
We, the undersigned residents of [Town Name], strongly oppose the proposed St. Mary’s HUD housing development on Main Street. While we recognize the importance of affordable housing, we believe that this particular project is not in the best interest of our community for the following reasons:
1. Loss of Village Land and Disruptions to Community Spaces – For this project to move forward, village land would need to be sold or given to St. Mary’s. This would result in the loss of valuable public property and key community spaces. This land transfer would also lead to the rerouting of East Street, closure of the public restroom, the loss of parking space for the bike path, and the addition of a street crossing over the bike path, all of which would disrupt local traffic, public amenities, and community areas that are vital to residents and visitors alike.
2. Impact on Infrastructure & Resources – Our town’s infrastructure, including roads, water, and emergency services, is not equipped to handle an increase in population without significant strain. This development would place additional burdens on these essential services.
3. Parking Issues– The proposed development does not adequately address parking needs. Increased demand for parking will overflow into residential and business areas, creating unnecessary congestion and inconvenience for current residents and visitors.
4. Lengthy Construction Disruptions– This project would bring years of noise, road closures, and disruptions to our daily lives. Local businesses will suffer, and residents will be forced to endure extended construction delays, creating an unnecessary hardship for our community.
5. Threat to Our Town’s Revitalization – We have been working hard to revitalize and improve our town, attracting new businesses and enhancing community spaces. This project would set us back significantly, undermining our efforts to create a thriving and welcoming environment.
6. Declining Property Values– The addition of a HUD housing complex in this location is likely to reduce property values for nearby homeowners. This will negatively impact families who have invested in this community and expected their property values to remain stable or increase over time.
7. Other Negative Factors – Many other concerns and negative factors associated with this development have been raised during public meetings, which further highlight the reasons this project is not right for our community. These concerns only reinforce the need to halt this project.
This issue has been ongoing for far too long. We urge community officials to **deny all variances for this project and put an immediate end to any further consideration**. Our community has clearly spoken: We do not want this development on Main Street.
