Mandatory PhD for fellows in academics is a deliberate move to downgrade the fellowship program. We must resist this.

NUC should focus more on the rot in the universities rather than preoccupy itself with Phd for medical lecturers in the clinical sciences.

Forwarded message Who ever crafted this document, AS WELL AS ANYBODY WHO AGREES TO WORK WITH IT, MUST BE OUT OF HIS MIND TO CALL IT "A CONSIDERATION FROM WORLDS BEST PRACTICES"! Where is this world? USA, Canada, UK, Australia, where? Everywhere in the sensible world, a PhD for clinical teachers remains an option; & ONLY AN OPTION! The UK type MD remains "the HIGHER DOCTORAL DEGREE" to pursue for medics who desire such doctoral degrees after a fellowship; or even a DSc by thesis in North America. The entire objective of this PhD nonsense in medical education HAS NO OTHER PURPOSE THAN TO MESS UP & DOWNGRADE OUR RESIDENCY TRAINING PROGRAMMES, no more, no less. How does a PhD make someone a better medical or ANY educator, for that matter? In community medicine for example, an (obviously mere academic) MSc gives one no advantage in our residency training programmes. An MPH (which is a professional degree) gives one only a waiver for course work for the part I exam; but they must have another ONE YEAR MINIMUM of residency training to qualify for the part I exam ONLY. So how will they be equating part I to an MPH, MSc or less? I had since advocated our creating the credit units for our theoretical (lectures, tutorials, ward rounds& seminar), field work & practical/clinical/theatrical exposure training programmes in the residency programme, even if we will not be using those ourselves, but just to show these penis envious people the depth & quality of our residency training programmes. The PhD (or indeed any academic, even if also professional doctoral degree as the UK MD) must continue to be an optional matter. The National PG Medical College SHOULD be the body to articulate & execute all these qualifications as indeed provided for it it's foundational statutes, to stop all these nuisance discussions - in my humble opinion. The first and the best step to stop this madness is 21days ultimatum to withdraw services both to NUC and NPMN if the offensive and offending circular and policy *is not withdrawn.* We must attack it the way they are attacking us and our fellowship. Let's go there. On Emegency NEC we stand

This release is a ploy to relegate FWACP/S or FNMCP/S to below PhD. All the Fellowship holders should recognize this and not stay in ignorance. Hence this prescription by those who think they are wise and smart should be rejected in totality however, while pursuing the Part II programme, all membership - Part I holders should be encouraged to enter PhD since the same dissertation could be utilized for both PhD as well as the Dissertation for the Fellowship Examinations. God bless NUC, Medical Postgraduate Colleges and Nigeria.
