The NCDOT confirmed today that they will begin the safety assessment and structural redesign for the NC 54 and Huntingridge intersection. Unfortunately, the neighborhood of Falconbridge has had a front-row seat for the many serious accidents that occur on Eastbound NC 54, near the intersection with Huntingridge Rd, especially during the evening rush hour. It sometimes seems that on a weekly basis we can hear the squeal of brakes and the sound of cars colliding.
By signing this petition we urge NC DOT to initiate an assessment of what factors contribute to this rash of accidents - and, more critically, to then take steps to remediate the situation.

The volume of support for this petition has gained enough traction to compel a formal meeting with representatives from the district office. I am currently finalizing the documentation of incident reports to present during our upcoming discussion regarding safety remediation on NC 54.

We also have concerns about the Westbound lanes of NC 54 at the intersection with Huntingridge Rd, and the blinding light of sunset (dead ahead in the right season) which has caused a number of accidents. It becomes impossible to see a RED LIGHT!
When UNC is in session, there is usually an accident at the light on 54 at Huntingridge Road in the early half of the week, every week.
It took me 14 minutes to go east from Barbee Road (out of Meadowmont) to Huntington Road between 4:00 and 4:30 on a Wednesday. While making my way, four cars drove off 54 onto the grass to pass, one turned into Huntington, the other three sat at the light waiting for it to turn red and then green again, returning to 54.
I was personally involved in an accident here when a young man ran the red light and t-boned my car with my two young sons in the car, almost flipping the car to the side. The car was totaled, luckily my children were not hurt. Please please fix this intersection.
The intersection is complex, with a service road, a hill that obscures a long sight line, and bumper to bumper back ups heading towards Durham from Chapel Hill between 4 and 6 p.m. My family and I urge you to study this intersection to determine the way to remedy the situation. and make it safer for all commuters and residents. Thank you.
Our roads should be safe.
People are rushing to the freeway while approaching one of the worst intersections in the state. They need help to avoid running into one another.

My son and daughter were T-boned and they both nearly died. This intersection is dangerous! I fully support actions to determine how to improve safety.
