Methane emissions are one of the leading causes of global warming. Methane, which is a toxic greenhouse gas, is 28 times more potent than carbon dioxide. One of the ways methane is released is by the compression of food waste in landfills. Furthermore, nitrous oxides are a greenhouse gas that also contributes to global warming, and they are found in synthetic based nitrogen fertilizers. Both of these environmental problems can be greatly reduced by composting. Therefore, by signing this petition you are supporting the implementation of a compost collection program in which all food production and distribution institutions in Nassau and Suffolk County will be mandated to save their food scraps for collection rather than disposing of them.
