There is no reason why the school mascot needs to be changed. Skowhegan has Indian heritage, therefore we will honor and take pride in that heritage. it's not like we are making fun of Indians. we take pride in the name.

The name is part of the town we grew up in. We have the Indian that we recently restored to show that history. We never intended the name to be a negative thing only part of a history to be proud of.

The names; Norridgewock, Kennebec, Skowhegan, all have Native American origins, so if the school uses the Indian as its symbol/mascot then it is out of respect. If the NAACP and some Native Americans want to remove these names and references then maybe they do not want to be remembered and honored by future generations of Maine citizens.
