I am a past pupil of a very small school, not unlike this one, in Co Tyrone. I can wholeheartedly say that I believe it provided me with the best opportunity to learn faster, achieve more for myself and have an all round more positive attitude to school. Small schools provide a sense of belonging, each student in a small school like this is nether known by their teachers. This has a positive affect on pupils engaging in school activities, attendance, parent teacher relations not to mention a better opportunity for teachers to take time to help each child individually according to their learning needs. All of this and much more offered by small schools like Crievagh plays a vital part in any child's experience of school life and promotes their ability to learn and grow. Studies on this subject speak for themselves, and to take all of this opportunity away from any child is cruel.

This is an exceptional small rural school that has provided an excellent standard of education for over 200 years. To close Crievagh Primary School would not only deprive our future children of the same opportunity but would remove the focal point of the community as its the only public building in the locality. As a paretn of children who have attneded this brilliant school, Icannot understand why the government does not value small schools such as Crievagh. My children loved their time at Crievagh and have received a great education from excellent teachers in beautiful surroundings. Maybe the politician s should focus their money saving schemes on other areas within the education system such as the disgraceful waste of millions of pounds on talks about the establishment of the non existent ESA.

AS A PARENT OF CHILDREN WHO HAVE WENT TO CRIEVAGH SCHOOL AND A CHILD WHO IS STILL AT THE SCHOOL, I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED AT THE PROPOSED CLOSURE OF “OUR” SCHOOL. JUST LIKE OTHER PARENTS AT THE SCHOOL WE WERE KEEN SUPPORTERS OF OUR NEW DEVOLVED POLITICAL POWERS IN STORMONT, BUT DIDNT THINK FOR ONE MINUTE WE COULD BE ONE OF THE CASUALTIES WITHIN THIS SYSTEM. CRIEVAGH SCHOOL, LIKE ALL RURAL SCHOOLS HAS BEEN AT THE HEART OF OUR COMMUNITY FOR ALL OF MY CHILDRENS LIFETIME, MY LIFETIME, THEIR GRANDPARENTS LIFETIME AND WAY FURTHER BACK. WITHOUT THIS SCHOOL CRIEVAGH STOPS BEING AN ACTIVE COMMUNITY.THE SCHOOL ITSELF IS INVALUABLE TO THE EDUCATION, CONFIDENCE AND IDENTITY OF OUR CHILDREN AS YEAR AFTER YEAR CHILDREN WHO LEAVE THE SCHOOL ACHIEVE HIGH ACCOLADE IN THEIR NEXT LEVEL OF EDUCATION AND COMMENT ON THEIR GOOD BEHAVIOUR. I WOULD HOPE THAT ANY MINISTER INVOLVED WITH OUR PARTICULAR PROBLEM AT THE MINUTE WOULD TAKE ALL THIS INTO CONSIDERATION WHEN MAKING ANY DECISION WITH REGARD TO OUR SCHOOL. Please, help us to keep CRIEVAGH PRIMARY SCHOOL open because if we as parents don’t fight for our CHILDREN, who will? If we witnessed a CHILD being hurt, we would HELP, and just because this hurt may not be seen as cuts and bruises, it’s hurting the CHILDREN at Creivagh just the same. Our daughter wants to know why someone who doesn’t know or understand anything about her school, wants to come in and break up her family. Can someone please answer her question? I can’t, because it doesn’t make sense to me either, all I know is I am the one consoling her at night.

Crievagh PS is a shining example of what primary education should be. The care and dedication of the teachers is second to none and the emphasis placed on respect and trust is reflected in every child that ever walked through the doors. Based on that fact alone, my question is why would you even consider closing this school? Yes there is a small population in attendance but we should be thinking about how we can nurture and grow this, not how to close it and claw back a few quid in the budget. I hope common sense prevails.

As a parent of two children in Crievagh Primary School I am absolutely shocked and saddened to think that this school could be considered for "potential closure". If the school life goes from this community then so does its unique identity. There is a strong family and community ethos which permeates the school. It has been delivering quality education for 150 years and has proven its adaptability to change to meet the needs of our children. The Quality of Teaching and Learning in Crievagh Primary School is outstanding and this was highlighted in their Inspection report of April 2009. Pupil enrolment is steady and has been for numerous years. The school has historically remained within budget year after year. My children talk happily and enthusiastically about their experiences at school and the support and encouragement they receive from the staff. Pastoral care in the school is excellent and a significant strength of the school. Extra curricular activities that the children of Crievagh participate in is second to none: tin whistle, French classes, rounders, traditional group, Zumbatronic to mention just a few. These are just about a few reasons why Crievagh PS should remain open. I really hope that Mr O' Dowd thinks before he makes any changes to education in this area which could have a significant, detrimental effect on the life of the community. At a time when government is advocating ‘care in the community’ and ‘volunteering in the community’ it seems a contradiction to get rid of a school which suits the needs of the community, has the support of local people and is at the heart of the community.

I had the privilege and pleasure of teaching in Crievagh Primary School for three years. As a substitute teacher with a variety of experiences in larger schools I was able to see firsthand the benefits of a small school and composite classes in ensuring that each child achieves his/her maximum academic, social, emotional and physical potential. I really think Mr O’Dowd needs to visit the school and meet the children before making any decision about it’s future.

We should be doing everything in our power to keep small schools in rural communities open. The smaller class sizes / less children per teacher, result in a better level of education for the children and they go on to become more useful members of society.
