Horseracing has been an integral part of American culture since colonial settlement. The popularity of horseracing has fluctuated with American society, but remains a booming industry today.Horseracing currently generates roughly $4 billion in revenue every year. This outrageous profit is at the expense of the racehorses, which see little to no reward for their efforts. During a racehorses career, it will very likely experience crippling injuries and drug abuse. In most cases, a horse’s racing career begins much too early, before the skeletal system is fully developed, which puts the horse at an elevated risk for airway disease, fractures and strained tendons. In response to these debilitating conditions, horses are often sold or euthanized. Arguably even more inhumane, if the horse is kept, it is heavily drugged. This does not treat the injury, but merely masks the pain so the horse can continue to train, incurring further and more serious injuries with each workout. Authorities are aware of this illegal drug use, but do little to control or prevent the issue. Ask them to help prevent drug abuse and protect the rights of race horses!
