When courses and services are being cut, how does the board justify this expenditure?

Out of all the upgrades that could have been made on campus that actually benefit the students who pay to study here, the executives put it towards themselves instead. This is not acceptable.

I can understand the general need to renovate the Administration Building. However, the expenditure of $4.5 million on the executive offices is trivial, selfish, undemocratic, greedy, and an indication of the executive team`s indifference towards students and the spaces they use.

There are already rules set in place to govern the size of offices, and due to your greed you are changing them.

The classrooms in cragie are very much in need of renovations. Agreed that the administration building needed some too, but >8 million? Absolutely unnecessary and utterly wasteful spending.

I have no idea how expensive it actually is to create an accomodating building. However, it is absolutely unnecessary go to such lengths to have a $150,000 staircase. I'd rather that the money go to Craigie Hall, where I'm sure the rooms and their instruments could use some of that money. As a science major. I'm loving the way EEEL and Science A (although the rotary vap machines still doesn't work) looks. Besides, I'm sure I'd get tired going in and out of a 400 sq/ft (where's the love for metric?)space

This university could have used that money in so many other ways that will ACTUALLY benefit the students that PAY the tuition

Have a look at the story on http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/u-of-c-head-elizabeth-cannon-says-8-1m-office-upgrade-needed-1.2434086.
Best comments:
"Office renovations should be discretionary spending in times of fiscal constraints. True leadership never puts their wants ahead of those they are hired to serve. Regardless that they say that it did not impact the students or faculty, they wasted a significant opportunity to send a powerful and appropriate message. Shame on them"
"Derrick M. Nault
“Absolutely did not impact .... number of faculty or staff we have on campus." Um, as a recently departed faculty member I can say that is not 100% true. I can't speak for others, but constant budgeting issues and poor administration were two major reasons why I left U of C to work abroad. Lack of concern for educational quality for students was another factor."

This is absolutely despicable. The executives and the University should be ashamed, but that would require an ethical compass that they clearly do not possess.

There are so many things that could have been done with that money. Especially in science A lectures where i remember an entire row of seats falling over during lecture. Tape on the chairs and the floor and tuition being so high and not to mention parking.
