Petition to Enhance Vegan Offerings at UCSB Portola Dining Hall

In the UCSB community it is crucial that we recognize the importance of the health and sustainability of our dining hall options. We advocate that there be a significant increase in the availability of vegan options catered at the Portola Dining Hall. Specifically, we propose a minimum of a 25% increase in the number of vegan dishes offered by 2026. By doing so, our campus can not only align with the morals and ethics some community members may have towards what they consume, but we can also enhance the ability for other students to have the opportunity to expand their ability for new dining options.
Additionally, with incorporating a greater amount of vegan options, we can assure the culture of inclusivity and respect the dietary preferences of our students. Plant-based diets have numerous benefits such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions, promoting healthy habits, and conserving water sources. By including more options, nonvegan students can be inspired to explore a plant-based diet and reduce their meat and dairy consumption. Plant-based diets allow for lower risks of heart diseases, diabetes, and even certain cancers. More plant-based options will allow students to make smarter choices that benefit their physical and mental-wellbeing.
