Petition to Enforce Recess Rights for Students
Dear Harmony Unified Administration and Board,
We, the undersigned parents and guardians of students at Harmony Unified, are writing to express our concern regarding the withholding of recess and lunch playtime as a punitive measure. This practice is not only detrimental to our children's well-being but also violates California state law.
According to Senate Bill 291, effective from the 2024-25 school year, educators are prohibited from withholding recess as a form of punishment. The law mandates that all elementary students receive at least 30 minutes of daily recess, recognizing the critical role of unstructured play in social and emotional development.
Recess is essential for children to release energy, improve focus, and develop social skills. We urge the school to adhere to this law and ensure that our children receive their rightful playtime.
We appreciate your attention to this matter and look forward to your prompt action to align with state regulations.
Sincerely,
Parents and guardians of the children at Harmony Unified School District
