PETITION TO CREATE A NO HOMEWORK POLICY OVER EVERY OTHER WEEKEND

We, the undersigned, support a policy of having a homework free weekend, every other weekend, for all students at Souhegan High School. Weekends are defined as the days off after a school week finishes. This means students should be allowed to relax after a week of hard, stressful schoolwork. The exceptions to this new rule would be: projects assigned 3 days before a weekend, AP and Honors class work and studying for any exams after the weekend.

There is no rule in the present regarding a homework free weekend, however there is a policy that no homework is allowed to be given during vacations. Teachers are currently allowed to assign any and as much homework as they wish to assign over weekends. According to the National Sleep Foundation “Sleep is essential for a person’s health and wellbeing.” When homework is assigned over the weekend it creates stress that can lead to students having sleep issues.

Homework is an extra burden that can weigh a student down, when they should be able to rest for a weekend so that their minds are refreshed and ready to learn when they come back to a school week.
