Petition to Close Greenwood Airport

This is a petition for people who support this cause. Not for people who disagree. If you want to argue about the pros and cons of aviation safety, please do it another forum. If you don't agree with the petition, don't sign it. It IS a petition site, created for people who WANT to sign the petition.

This is a joke. You are literally embarrassing yourself. You move next door to an airport that was constructed in a very safe location long before your home was built, and you didn't realize there would be planes in the air? Now you ate starting a petition and attacking what many consider a central part of your community, not to mention their means of living. Statistically speaking, being crushed by a general aviation airplane is virtually impossible. You are dense, if you'll excuse my rudeness, and the county and faa are going to consider this a waste of time

Interesting fact I learned yesterday: There have been at least 15 plane crashes connected with the Greenwood Airport a.k.a. formerly the Skyway Airport, since 1985.

An airport is a business that creates revenue. An airport authority pays taxes, and makes money like any other business and they pay for the land. Take that buiesness away and its gone forever, but with an airport it gets even worse. Tearing up the runways would cost the city way more than just leaving them there, so usually they leave them. Now that you have a huge expanse of land that is the old airport people would like to buy it right? WRONG! Owning the property is more expensive for the average Joe looking for a place to open a business than someone looking to open an airport. Why you may ask? Because someone looking to use the airport for planes will use the facility to 100%, where as farm Joe may only use hanger 1 for his seeds. Also I have flown through KHFY and I looked their policy up online.

Tell me in exactly what way it would cause a lot of harm? How do you know the runways would stay? Do you live in Greenwood and fly out of this airport?

Shutting down an airport the size of greenwood would cause alot of harm to the community. The airport would be closed and the runways would stay, the land would never be developed on again and possibly would affect the local economy. Also KHFY is almost directly below KIND's Class C airspace, and almost all pilots would atleast contact KIND Approach to get a flight following. Also not just anyone can rent a plane. You must have a check-out with an instructor.

John, Thank-you for providing the opposing view. I'm sorry I do not agree. We agree on a few things though- someone needs to move. I think it would be much more costly to move businesses and homes than to relocate a small airport that is mainly used for student pilot training. As a taxpayer, it would cost you more to move US than them. I love watching the planes, too. I like hearing them over head. I have even flown out of this airport on numerous occasions. The people at the airport are nice. I I agree that more regulations are needed to prevent further development around the airport if it is going to remain. The real issue in all of this is: how did our zoning commissioners allow this to happen? But now that it has, and there has been so much development, something has to give. The planes routinely fly under 500 feet over residential homes, which is forbidden by the FAA. So if it's forbidden, and a plane HAS to land, something is not right. The homes and businesses are too close to the airport. Plain and simple. The plane that crashed Saturday is evidence of this. People say, "only one crash in twenty years"..but that crash shouldn't have happened if the houses and power lines had not been so close. Only one crash....near me...is enough to get me thinking....and it should concern you as well. What concerns me is the relaxed environment of the airport: anyone can walk in there and fly a plane out. Did you ever think about that? There is no control tower and I don't think they even have to fly a flight plan (not totally sure about this one, but pretty sure) as a friend of mine used to fly out of there about 10 years ago and that was the case then), it is mainly student pilots receiving training, and as I said the planes fly too low. This is all just material for disaster as I see it. I'm not waiting for the next plane crash. I am simply trying to get people who see this danger to join with me in an honest and sincere movement to just take a look at how the devel

I feel that the greenwood airport has done a great amount for the city of Greenwood. I've actually spoken to some of the local shop owners on Main Street and they say during the Christmas season they've seen a spike in tourists who visit and some say they have travelled far and arrived through the airport. I don't feel closing or relocating is the solution. I do feel the neighborhoods are a bit close to the airport, but at the same time this is what we have to live with as we are the ones who moved into the neighborhoods. I'm a resident who loves just south of the airport off of main. The crash shook me but has not changed my opinion on the good of the airport. It's brought business to Greenwood and helped to keep our taxes lower. I say if anything we need to begin relocating homes around the airport. I feel it would be much simpler for the city and state to pay me as a resident to move to another part of greenwood or Indianapolis than it would be to destroy an entire airport remove all the planes and they're owners have them debase the aircraft and lose the business associated with the airport. We have to keep in mind that if the airport goes away it won't just go away over night. The city will have to buy back the land that will never again generate the same amount of income no matter what is built on it. They will have to pay businesses on the field to move, and pay for the movement and rebasing of aircraft who call Greenwood home. I as a tax payer am not in favor of paying for a bunch of old planes to be moved. I'd rather have the city pay me to move and I'll go find another place to live. I also have no problem with living so close to the airport though. I feel that if you do feel uncomfortable you should move. My son loves walking out back in the summer watching these planes in fact it's even inspired him to be a pilot one day. I say let's keep the airport but find new regulations to keep neighborhoods farther from the runways

It is time to move on to safer more public awarness. Wake up people to the harm to the many controled by the few.

This petition will be delivered to the City of Greenwood mayor and to the FAA once we receive 100 signatures. The goal is 500, but 100 will get their attention. Thank-you!!!

The aviation community would really appreciate it If you started providing good information. These aren't just a bunch of old planes. Some of these are older planes with highly upgraded systems. There even jets on the field. I'm fact I know of one citation mustang on the field. You are skewing the facts and providing misleading information. 15 accidents at this airport is correct but you forgot to mention how many of those crashed into residential areas? And you also forgot to mention how many of those cause a fatality on the ground or the death of the pilot. The crash back in march was in an open field. In fact the last crash that occurred in a major residential area was the 1992 crash that killed six people. You do realize that if you don't start providing the full truth and giving whole information pieces to the public when you take this before the board they will laugh at you right? Plus you're not even an aviation official. You have never even studied in the matter. You call pilot drug abusers who don't get enough sleep. You say you feel you take your own life into your hands when you fly? Sounds to me like you have a had a personal vendetta against the airport and aviation in general even before the crash. I would advise anyone who thinks about signing this to find another cause as you will only be brought down and embarrassed by JILL ANNETTE COBB.

Also how is your page fair when you simply delete comments of opposing views? All of my comments are gone and I provided good cause and reason in each. I laid out prices, information, businesses, regulations, and my own training and all of them opposed your view so you deleted them and most of the other opposing views? Sounds to me like you're more of a liar than anything.
