We are Citizens United to Close the Greenwood Airport. The Greenwood Airport is a public safety threat to the citizens of Greenwood, Indiana. It should be closed or relocated. We are not Aviation experts, but we are citizens concerned about the dangers the airport presents to our community.

It used to fit well into this community, but it no longer works here. It is too dangerous to the human population that is literally surrounding the periphery of the runways. (The back of the Goodwill store on Emerson is but a few feet from the entrance runway!!) The entrance runway is also but a few feet from County Line Road, where hundreds, if not thousands of cars pass daily. There are FOR SALE signs up all around what remains of the land around the airport-poising the area for even more development. An airport should have more land surrounding it so it can operate safely.

According to the FAA, this airport has "high intensity student training". The planes routinely do not observe FAA regulations which state they CANNOT fly under 500 ft. and 1,000 ft ceilings (depending on circumstance) above residential homes.

There may have been a time when having this airport here was wise and of benefit to the community. It may still benefit some businesses, sports men/women, and student pilots. But the cost incurred for the few people interested in maintaining it (at a cost to the taxpayer), is not worth the risk involved in allowing this small airport to continue to operate, and put the growing human population at risk.

In the aftermath of the serious airplane crash that occurred on July 11, 2014, that has opened up this controversial discussion yet once again, the residents signing this petition, think it's time to demonstrate common sense and take action to make sure this does not happen in the future. According to various reports available to the public via the internet such as http://airplane-accidents.findthebest.com/d/d/Indiana/Greenwood -- there have been 13 accidents connected to the Greenwood Airport (formerly Skyway Airport) between 1985 and 2008. Since 2008, there have been additional accidents (non-fatal but accidents, nonetheless). In the above report, there was another fatal accident that occurred in 1992, which was the result of a mid-air collision which was speculated to have occurred because of lack of a control tower. The airport is being squashed by all of the development surrounding it. If the homes were not located so close to the airport perhaps the latest accident would have occurred in a cornfield.

Close the airport now. We don't care if it is relocated, but we want it closed to the area in which it currently is operating. Allowing it to remain open is a threat to our homes and public safety, as is evident by the recent crash, the high intensity of student pilot training that occurs there, and the development that has occurred along the periphery of the airport.
