Petition to Amend Loyola's Spring 2020 GPA/ Grading Policy

Given that all students learn differentIy I understand the desire to not let this lockdown affect their GPA. However, some kids are doing great and need these grades in order to compete with all the other kids from other academic schools who are counting their spring grades towards their GPA’s. A more reasoned approach would be to allow the students to choice whether they would like to apply their Spring semester grades to their GPA’s or not. Please make this simple adjustment for the betterment of your clients the students and their families.

I concur with the Hold Harmless policy. The grading policy should differentiate those students who have worked hard to improve or maintain their high GPA and provide for a fair competitive environment with other schools. By the same token we must also be cognizant of those students who may have been disadvantaged by the distant learning due to various factors that may have otherwise not been present in an in-school academic setting.

I wholeheartedly agree and was greatly disappointed in the school’s decision. I am elated that other parents have taken up this cause in this manner.

I am a Loyola alum and the father of a 6th Grade boy who is working hard to gain admittance to Loyola in two years. If my son was at Loyola now, I would be livid about this decision, and it may cause our family to rethink our interest in Loyola for his high school experience. Loyola is the perfect combination of developing a man for others while preparing a student academically through hard work that leads to a competitive advantage in the college application process. A decision like this, in my opinion, puts a child BEHIND public schools when working for admission to the best colleges.

I strongly support the requests outlined in this petition. I think those who have worked hard under these trying conditions should not go unrecognized.

I could not agree more. This policy may have a detrimental effect to sophomores and Juniors.

Timing of policy is poor. I understand motivation, however changing it mid semester was inequitable and inconsistent, Especially for those who have worked hard to maintain their achievement level in spite of adversity as expected by Loyola during this Time.

I believe that grades should count or have the option to count for this semester. Many of the kids have worked as hard as ever during these incredible times and they deserve to see their efforts analyzed and rewarded.

We feel this is a very important year and grades should be counted especially since they’re working so hard in this horrific coronavirus.

This is beyond unfair. My son worked so hard given the circumstances. The amount of willpower it took....personally i wouldnt have been able to. These kids have suffered enough now you guys wont let this be added to their cumulative gpa? SO incredibly unfair.

A Hold Harmless policy provides a win win solution. The timing of this is also very concerning - going into AP testing week. So many boys are feeling defeated right now. Not the mindset you want them to have going into testing.

We are in absolutely support of this petition and have already voiced our extreme disappointment to Loyola regarding this change.

Agree with the Hold Harmless policy. That ensures a basic fairness for all students. I do not agree with sliding the grading scale, an 87% is not the equivalent to a student who scores a 100%. Furthermore. I also disagree that removing (+/-) as it is the (+/-) that often distinguishes the Cumulative GPAs for the students.. We must also anticipate possible stay At home orders in the future and this will set an unfair and unfortunate precedent for future grading policies that are inconsistent with the nation which could possibly put our students at a disadvantage. We must help and support those students who are currently challenged in their learning environment. Let’s do that by implementing a fair and equitable grading policy for all students!

I think students who do well should not be penalized. I say give students and option who have a difficult time with online learning a pass fail grade and students who do well should have their GPA included in the cumulative GPA.

Please do not negate the hard work put in by the students and the teachers who have been keeping the Loyola standards high!
