KTU should seriously consider removing the year-back system. It's outdated, adds unnecessary stress, and wastes valuable time. Students should be allowed to clear backlogs while progressing in their studies, like in many other universities. The current system affects mental health and demotivates even capable students. Education should support growth—not punish failure. It's time for a change that puts student well-being and modern learning first.

Subject: Petition to Reconsider and Abolish the Year Back System for 2019 Scheme Students under KTU To The Honorable Vice Chancellor, APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University (KTU), Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala Respected Sir/Madam, We, the undersigned students of the 2019 Scheme under APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University (KTU), humbly submit this petition to bring to your kind attention the difficulties and hardships caused by the Year Back System currently being enforced, and to request a compassionate and practical reconsideration of this policy. Background: The year back system prevents students with more than a specified number of backlogs from progressing to the next academic year. This policy has had an increasingly negative impact on a large number of students, especially those of the 2019 scheme, due to multiple compounding factors such as: COVID-19 Pandemic Disruptions: The 2019 batch's foundational semesters (S1 and S2) were severely affected by the sudden transition to online learning. The lack of proper academic guidance, unstable internet connectivity, and mental health issues had a lasting effect on our learning and performance. Mental Health and Pressure: The added pressure of backlogs, internal marks dependency, and unclear academic guidelines have led to severe stress, anxiety, and in some cases, depression among students. Inequality of Opportunity: The year back system disproportionately affects students who come from rural areas, financially struggling backgrounds, and those with medical or personal challenges during the academic year. Lack of Academic Recovery Pathways: Students under year back have no provision to actively pursue academic improvement through bridge courses or extra classes. Instead, they are forced to wait, leading to loss of time, money, and morale. Our Humble Requests: In light of the above reasons, we kindly request the university to: 1.
