I don't need the instructor to recap the chapter I just read. It's when I go home to do his/her assignments that I truly need them the most. Face-to-face time could be better spent being constructive with the material (working problems) rather than presenting the material (lecturing out of the book).

These classrooms are horrible for engineering classes, particularly lectures. There isn't much whiteboard space, for one. This is detrimental for classes that rely on mathematical exposition of physical principles. Furthermore, there's no obvious "front" of the room for the professor to stand. No matter the professor's orientation relative to the classroom, however, some students will have a difficult time seeing and hearing them.
These classrooms do not promote innovation and are certainly not "the way of the future." They may work well for ENGR 111-112 classes in which classroom time is spent building projects, but they hinder students' ability to learn in lecture-based, math-heavy engineering classes.

It's very important for the administration to listen to the students on this. The research that points toward the new classroom model might work well in certain subjects and for workshops, but it is absolutely terrible for mathematical subjects. We should be aiming for the best of both rather than replacing one with the other. We can have the benefits of both models very easily if we decided to implement it that way. 10 years from now the conventional wisdom will be to flip it back the other way toward a happy medium.

In my opinion these types of clasrooms are terrible for learning from professors. Having a non-centralized room makes it hard to see, hear, and understand professors. The problem with these clasrooms is that the traditional lecture is never going away, teachers will always have something to show and say to the entire class and not having a central location for professors to be seen and heard is a terrible learning environment. These classrooms may be suitable for project work and small group work but they will never work for the way proffessors have been trained and like to teach.

The idea of active learning is fantastic, as it keeps the class engaged. In our situation, when a professor is lecturing a new topic, it's very hard to hear him or her speak, the screens have major glare, both of which make it very hard to pay attention.
