This action should be stopped immediately and it’s quite unnecessary because we all already have a permit from the city for the legal basement. This needs to thrown out.

The city makes life difficult for those who want to follow the right process. ARUs that did not request formal approvals are 20x those that followed the process rather the latter is the one targeted. As a matter of fact, it is hell getting formal approval from the city.

Remove the ridiculous fee. I just completed my legal basement with all the codes follwed and inspection done. Why should I pay a second time?

We finished our basement in May 2025 with city involved in every step of the way from approving the plans till the final certification. During the various stages of construction the city conducted multiple inspections with special stress on safety features like fully integrated smoke/carbon alarm system, fire exits and egress windows etc. As construction costs stand today this project was not cheap, it literally drained us financially, however, we were happy to get it done with full compliance. However, we are surprised to hear that just two months after completion and passing all the inspections the city wants to do another inspection with another fee? This just doesn’t make sense, what did they forget to check just two months ago? And why they want to charge the home owner for it?

I strongly oppose this initiative by the Town of Milton and the rationale for this stance is absolutely explainable.

I raised the issue of double dipping on a flimsy pretext too. However they want to eat the cake, so had to go through a second inspection.

This inspection process is unfair to homeowners who have already paid extra to make their basements legal. If the city has concerns, they should conduct random inspections on selected properties. If any violations are found, the city can impose penalties on those specific homeowners and recover the cost of the inspection from them.
