Petition NO data centers- YES to rural Preservation! - Strasburg VA

Why the Data Center Is a Bad Deal for Strasburg
The proposed Project Tallmadge data center may sound like progress, but the reality is far more concerning:
1. Minimal Job Creation
Data centers are highly automated. Despite taking up millions of square feet, they typically add only 30–50 long-term jobs—many of which are highly specialized and often filled by outside contractors. This offers little benefit to the local workforce compared to the massive footprint and infrastructure demands.
2. Noise Pollution
The constant hum of industrial cooling systems, backup generators, and HVAC units runs 24/7. Nearby residents may experience chronic low-frequency noise, which is not only annoying but can also impact sleep, concentration, and overall well-being.
3. Strain on Water and Power
If the center uses water-cooled systems, it could draw millions of gallons daily, potentially lowering the local water table and affecting well users. Simultaneously, the enormous electricity demand can stress the grid and contribute to rising utility rates for residents—especially if infrastructure upgrades are passed on to taxpayers.
4. Health Risks for Neighbors
Diesel generators used during power outages emit fine particulate matter (PM2.5), a known contributor to asthma, heart disease, and respiratory illness. Residents living near the site may be exposed to these emissions, as well as constant electromagnetic fields (EMFs), which are still under active study for long-term effects.
⸻
Bottom Line:
Massive footprint, minimal benefit. Strasburg risks trading peace, health, and long-term sustainability for a project that adds few jobs, raises infrastructure costs, and burdens local residents—all for a company that may not even stay long-term.
