Petition in Support of Lease of former St. Pete Beach Police Department facility by Academy by the Sea Charter Public School
May 2013
Dear Mayor, Vice-Mayor and Members of the St. Pete Beach, Florida City Commission:
Academy by the Sea Charter Public School, Inc. has presented the City of St. Pete Beach with a Proposal for Lease, requesting that the City lease the former Police Department facility to the school, should it be approved. By this Petition, we request your support for the school’s use of the former Police Department facility. Since 2009, there has been no public school option for families living in St. Pete Beach and surrounding beach communities. Academy by the Sea is seeking to charter from the Pinellas County School Board to offer a Montessori based program for students in 4th through 8th grades for the beaches communities. The school will serve approximately 160 students.
The former Police Department facility currently sits vacant. That facility would provide an excellent beginning home for the school because it has appropriate classroom space, security and green space, and it is also near to the Recreation Center with its facilities and programs. Your agreement to lease this facility to the new school is essential to ensuring the success of the school, as a top quality facility will draw the best teachers and the best students.
As your constituents we request your support and ask that you agree to lease the former Police Department facility to Academy by the Sea Charter Public School.
