Approximately 87% of drivers reported that they have engaged in at least one distracted driver behavior every month. Texting and driving is the cause for 21% of all vehicle crashes. Texting and driving is a very important issue that needs to be addressed because it can cause preventable injury and death. When someone takes their eyes of the road and look at their phone, they become disconnected from their surroundings in a matter of seconds. This increases the chances of an accident as well as danger to themselves and others. However, it is very difficult to tackle and solve this problem as there is no way to monitor who is texting and driving. But, we can add more harsher and stricter sentences for people found guilty of distracted driving. By doing this, we could minimize this civic issue as well as lowering the number of car crashes.

To address the severity of texting and driving, we propose implementing harsher sentences to stop this dangerous behavior such as significantly increasing fines starting at $1,000, with repeat offenders facing fines up to $5,000. Stricter penalties such as automatic license suspensions should be enforced. For a first offense, the penalty will be 6 months, and continuing this behavior a few more times can lead to permanent revocation. Offenders could also receive six demerit points per violation, with mandatory completion of distracted driving education programs at their expense.

With our petition, we wish to raise awareness, hold drivers accountable, and reduce the number of preventable accidents and fatalities caused by texting and driving. By advocating for stricter consequences such as higher fines, longer license suspensions, and mandatory education programs, we believe we can stop people from engaging in this dangerous behavior.
