Petition for UN peacemaking mission in Syria
We, as concerned Arabs and Muslims and citizens of the world, ask that that international community live up to its legal and moral responsibility to end the crimes against humanity being committed by the Syrian regime. We have lost all hope that the current regime has any intention to peacefully negotiate. All previous promises to end the violence have resulted in increased violence and further delay will only result in more bloodshed.
We object to the regime and certain international actors characterizing the violence as insurrection or criminality. The violence was begun, and continues to be overwhelmingly committed, by the regime against ordinary citizens who were exercising their human right to peacefully demonstrate against the policies of their government. We believe the current situation has moved beyond the possibility of political compromise and ask the international community to use all available measures and resources to stop the crimes being committed by the regime.
We recognize the cultural sensitivities to international intervention in the Arab and Muslim world, but believe that the only way to end the violence, save lives, and institute a stable and free Syrian state is through outside intervention. Therefore, we ask that the United Nations immediately organize a multilateral, armed peacemaking mission to end the violence and begin the transition to a free and democratic Syria.
