I used to live there in college. There are maybe 10 percent of individuals that are problematic but everyone else gets to use the freedom to experience a great lifestyle. Why do we always have to pay for the irresponsibility of others? Save Cloyne!

I am a philosophy major at West Virginia University and from the research I have done regarding Cloyne Court, it seems to be an experience that teaches students things more important and more profound than the theorems and facts they learn in the classroom. Cloyne is an education in humanism. It teaches people to be better people in terms of cooperating with others, developing deep relationships, taking responsibility not only for themselves but for the community, and perhaps most importantly being mindful of future generations to come and people whom they will never meet. They plant trees and build decks so that those who come after may enjoy them and want to pay it forward to those who come after them. In these ways and many others Cloyne is creating better people, better people that this world direly needs. Though I have never experienced Cloyne Court and never will, I am profoundly disheartened to think future students will be deprived of the amazing and unique opportunity to grow as people that Cloyne Court provides.

I lived in Cloyne from 1994 to 1996 and enjoyed it quite a lot. Loved the free-spiritedness and self-reliance of residents, even though it was sometimes challenging. Please don't attempt a "cleanup." It won't work and will make residents feel alienated.

It's really sad to see personal selfishness and irresponsibility masquerade as a social cause dedicated to self abuse. The reality is that without liability insurance, the BSC would cease to exist and then there would no decent low-income housing for students who otherwise could not afford a Berkeley education.

Because of the drug death at Cloyne, the very existence of the BSC is at risk. The BSC has a history of difficulty with herion dealing going back a number of years. It is well-known that Barrington ceased to be a BSC house as a result.
Were there to be another drug death at Cloyne, the BSC would lose its liability insurance for good and would have to cease operation and disband. If what you're trying to do is destroy the BSC, this is a great way to do it.
The mission of the BSC is to provide affordable housing for low-income students. Freedom of expression in the form of drug use has to take 2nd place to the need for low-income housing, without which many would not be able to afford a Berkeley education.
It's not as if any current Cloyne residents won't have a place to next year. It just won't be Cloyne. What are you trying to preserve? House spirit? Sorry. When Cloyne chose to tolerate excessive drug use that resulted in a resident's death, a line was crossed for which there is no turning back.
The only way to eliminate the Cloyne drug culture is to start over. And while we're talking about freedom, what about the freedom to live in a home without people into drugs and substance abuse? You will be surprised at how many people have as their first priority taking advantage of a Berkeley education.

I strongly believe that the BSC should update its drug policy. Holding the entire membership hostage to a small group of irresponsible people, who for some reason see hard drugs as essential to their identity, is uncooperative and unfair. And yet I sign this petition wholeheartedly, because any decision at the BSC system should be made collaboratively and with maximum participation of the membership. It is dismaying to find that cabinet decided to work under the radar for such a long time, and it's particularly disappointing to learn about an initiative to evict all Cloyne residents en mass. Indeed, these are sad days for the BSC.

As a former house manager and Clone, I am troubled that this is the only proposed course of action for Cloyne. Cloyne is a community within the larger Berkeley community. It fosters friendships, family, and a welcome living space. For three years, Cloyne was my home and I can honestly say I would not be the successful individual I am today if not for my friends and family at Cloyne. Cloyne is suck.

The BSC needs to stop making everything so secretive. We as members of this non-profit deserve to know what's going on and be part of the decision. That so much different information is being tossed makes us feel like the BSC is lying to us and trying to purposefully keep us in the dark. This is less about Cloyne as it is about the BSC's right to decide without consulting the members of our COOPERATIVE.

If the proposal is intended to last, Cloyne deserves time for extra planning
