We, the people listed below, believe that Souhegan High School should adopt a mentality about
homework, aiming for each teacher to give around or below 15 minutes of homework each night, except
on doubles, in which case 30 minutes of homework should be aimed to be given from each teacher. This
mentality should be adopted by all teachers involved with 9th and 10th grade. Currently, there is no limit to
the amount of homework teachers can give.
The current situation involves students spending too much time on homework and by
doing so, missing on sleep. CNN health sleep expert Dr. Lisa Shrives stated: “Most people
know that if they are sleep deprived, they cannot make good decisions. Chronic partial sleep
deprivation affects our ability to think straight, make good decisions, and impacts our behavior.”
“After sleeping fewer than 6 hours per night for 2-3 weeks people may drive as poorly as
someone who’s been up for 24 hours,” says Dr. Daniel Cohen, a professor at Harvard Medical
School, “The slowest reaction times become very slow”
No research or study has ever proved that there is a direct relation between homework
and academic improvement. In fact, according to the third international Math and Science
Survey, there is a negative relationship between homework and academic grades in high schools
in America.
We would like to propose the mentality to SHS, aiming to reduce homework and allow
teens to do more of a variety of things, such as having a job, doing sports or activities, while still
doing well in school on tests and quizzes.
FINALLY. between practice and homework i feel like i dont even live here anymore. let us get some sleep.
