Petition for Having A No Homework Policy Over Vacations in Souhegan High School
We, the undersigned, think there should be a no homework policy over vacations, such as Thanksgiving break, the holiday break in December, February break and April break, in Souhegan High School.
According to the Pittsburg Post-Gazette, “Some of the nation’s most competitive schools are changing their homework policies…” Schools such as Harvard-Westlake in Los Angeles and Riverdale Country Day School in New York City are among the many that have adopted a homework policy.
Ridgewood High School, in New Jersey, put in place a no homework policy to emphasize the time for family and friends. When the students come back from the vacations teachers indicate that the students are eager to learn and are refreshed from the long break.
Vacations are meant for relaxing and spending time with family members, not being cooped up inside doing homework all day. Kelly Boylan, a student at Ridgewood High School, has stated that, “…we’re humans and not just students.”

Watching the stress levels in our house during what should be a restful break is exactly why I started this. I hear the same exhaustion in the messages you send me and it confirms that we are fighting for a necessary change.

Seeing this much traction proves that I am not the only one who feels the weight of these breaks being stolen by assignments. It brings me so much relief to know so many people agree that we deserve time to actually be human.

I hope the school listens to this. It is impossible to travel or visit relatives when you have 3 big projects due the Monday you get back. Please change this policy.
Kids need a break to actually recharge. They have been working non stop since the start of the year and it is just burnout waiting to happen.
Schools are out of control with the workload. Stop making them work through the holidays.
About time. Breaks are supposed to be breaks.
YES. Vacations are for family time not for staring at textbooks for five days straight. Let these kids breathe.
