We have a problem in New Westminster. The problem being a lack in restroom facilities. This is mostly affecting people experiencing homelessness. Most businesses will not allow non customers to use their restrooms, and the ones that do allow use are only open during certain hours. This forces people experiencing homelessness to use alleys, streets, and bushes to relieve themselves. Our proposal would be Porta-Potties in certain areas of New Westminster. This would help keep our streets clean, and allow dignity to people living without homes. We hope that you will give this idea great consideration. We, the undersigned, are concerned citizens who urge our leaders to act now to make publically accessible washrooms available in New Westminster.

Seeing this kind of movement confirms that people are finally noticing the reality of our streets. It has been a long and exhausting road but knowing I am not fighting for this alone keeps me going.

As a resident of the downtown core, mother of two young children, and volunteer gardener for our building, I have been dismayed to see our doorway and gardens used as a washroom. Not only is it disgusting for us residents, but it is humiliating for those homeless individuals who do not have access to public washrooms.

Availability and access to facilities is necessary to uphold human dignity. It seems to me that lack of facilities in all Canadian cities is a breach of the Charter, particularly affecting the elderly/pregnant/ill/disabled and their "security of person" rights. Accessible and clean public toilets must be legislated a priority of public infrastructure, as much as clean drinking water.

This is a must have for the neighbourhood I live in. The homeless people and skytrain riders are constantly using our lane way as a washroom near the New West skytrain station.

More washrooms, yes. I have been around The Royal City, especially parks, and I have to go to the bathroom and there is nowhere to go. I’ve had to relieve myself by going outside wherever I happen to be.

As someone who had a medical issue for a while that required more frequent bathroom use... this would have been a godsend.

Public washrooms for homeless women and children is essential and is a public health issue. Women experience on going issues not only on a monthly bases but on a daily bases as well. it is inhuman to believe that women and children should have to relive themselves in bushes, parks, sidewalks etc. Stregicley placing public washrooms throughout new west is the human thing to do. I support this petition.
