Us nursing and midwifery students are extremely upset at the news we received about us having to move all of our lectures to the Leicester Royal Infirmary. Many of us were given the impression that our lectures would continue on the main campus and subsequently have endured the extra cost and inconvenience of finding city accommodation to suit what is now inaccurate and misleading information. We all stand together in our opposition to this change.
What attracted many of us, students, to this course was that our lectures would take place at the GDC or the MSB. The current circumstances mean that you have not met promises and misled us into joining this university. The university advertised the George Davis Centre during open days and expressed that we will be based there. This is also still advertised on the university website.
Given that we have endured 18 months of online teaching, severely restricted student union activities and social life. The return to campus and the start of the academic year should be an exciting time for our class. However, nursing and midwifery students will not be able to attend student union events during the day. Whilst there are evening activities, this would not be inclusive to those that are aware of the potential dangers of student nightlife.
In addition, the change in lecture location also means that we aren't feasibly able to access the student cafeteria, and will be required to use the hospital canteen which isn’t as competitively priced or have the inconvenience of organising a packed lunch prior to travelling off-campus. Additionally, this also restricts our social life and interaction with students from other courses, preventing our social development and re-engagement after the pandemic. Which I believe is a key part of not just the student experience but also the maintenance of good mental health.
An internal research conducted found that many other students drive to University. The Leicester Royal Infirmary has car parking issues which would be an issue not only for students but for lectures too.
Some students have expressed that if they had known they would be spending their whole academic year in a hospital, due to placement being in a hospital setting too, they would’ve chosen a different university. This exemplifies not only our unhappiness with the recent location change but the level of unfairness we are being subject to because of such.

I am currently organizing the feedback from all of you to present a clear case for why we deserve to stay on our main campus. The university leadership has been quiet so far but they cannot ignore the reality of the misleading promises we were given when we signed up for this course.

Seeing so many of you join this effort has completely changed the way I look at this situation. We were promised a specific experience and it is clear that we are not the only ones feeling betrayed by these sudden changes. This momentum shows that our concerns are impossible to ignore.

Please have lectures in tge campus thank you. Please value the student university/campus life
I specifically signed up for this course because I was promised a full student experience (on the main campus) which was what I wanted. Moving off campus means I won't be able to easily access the library (which I go to after lectures every day), the student union or can go swimming before lectures either. I can also park for free across on the other side of Vicky Park, but it will cost me a fortune parking at the LRI for lectures. Furthermore, we weren't even consulted about this move. This flagrant disregard for even consulting us over our needs shows a total lack of regard for our rights as students.
An addition the university stipulates that any changes will be discussed and announced with students with the ability to consult and oppose changes - we are yet to have any official notification from the university of this change, and none of the students or faculty were consulted before the decision to move had already been decided by upper management.
This is so disappointing. I picked this uni specifically for the facilities at the GDC and now we are being pushed out. It feels like they just lied to us to get us to enroll.
The nursing course is advertised as based at the George Davis centre’ I have never as yet attended a lecture there.
Students should be studying in the campus.
Extremely disappointed in the news of having to move bases. Speaking for the whole 2021 cohort, we were sold a dream that we would be based in the ‘new medical and ahp building’. This did influence many of us decision in choosing the University of Leicester. The change in bases will affect many of us as we have only just settled in to a new campus which we expected to be our new home for four years, but then being told we are being shipped off elsewhere has disheartened many of us! Being based near the campus will allow us to access University Facilities which we are paying £9,000 a year for… not being based on campus will effect our education as we will all lack motivation, not accessing facilities will lack us in utilising the facilities to aid our grades! Once again, extremely disappointed that the nurses and midwives are being moved off campus.
