Immediate Safety Improvements to the St. Anne’s Church Road & SR 71 Intersection
We, the undersigned, urge DelDOT to prioritize and expedite critical safety improvements to the intersection of St. Anne’s Church Road and SR 71 in Middletown. This intersection has become increasingly hazardous, posing a daily risk to drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists. The community believes that action cannot wait until 2030 and asks for an immediate solution to prevent a potentially tragic incident
**Reasons for Immediate Action:**
1. **High Risk of Accidents**: The current intersection design lacks adequate traffic control and safety measures, making it a tragedy waiting to happen. Vehicles often speed through this area, and the lack of sufficient control only increases the likelihood of accidents.
2. **Limited Visibility**: The historic cemetery wall along SR 71 significantly restricts drivers' sightlines, adding to the dangers of this intersection. With poor visibility, particularly on the northbound approach, drivers may struggle to see oncoming traffic in time to make safe maneuvers.
3. **Increasing Traffic Volume**: New housing developments in the area are expected to bring even more traffic to this intersection. Without timely improvements, congestion and the potential for traffic accidents will only worsen.
4. **Interim Alternatives Are Available**: DelDOT has proposed interim measures, such as an all-way stop or a temporary signal. We strongly urge DelDOT to implement one of these measures immediately to reduce risks while long-term improvements are investigated and scheduled.
The safety of our community members and all who travel through this area should be the highest priority. We request that DelDOT implement an interim solution as soon as possible and accelerate plans for a permanent, safer design.
Thank you for your consideration and for taking action to protect our community.
